President Donald Trump has approved an execution by firing squad for former Army major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding more than 30 others in the 2009 Fort Hood massacre.
Hasan admitted at trial that he was the gunman, but said he had carried out the attack to stop US soldiers from harming Muslims overseas.
The decision comes days after an attempted lethal-injection execution in Tennessee went wrong. Christa Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital and was taken to hospital.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee subsequently halted the state’s remaining executions for the year and ordered an external review of the incident.
Hasan’s execution would be the first carried out by the US military since 1961, when Army private John Bennett was hanged at Fort Leavenworth.
The last military firing-squad execution took place even earlier, when private Eddie Slovik was shot in France in 1945 for desertion during the Second World War.
