Two employees have died and a third has been seriously injured following a workplace shooting at a United Rentals facility in Manassas, Virginia. The suspected gunman, identified as 37-year-old Marvin Grant, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a police pursuit.
Officers were called to the business in the 9400 block of Wellington Road shortly after 7am on Wednesday, 30 September, after receiving several reports of an active shooter. All three victims were employees of the facility.
Two victims were found in a garage area, while the third was located in an office within the garage, police said. They were taken to hospitals in Prince William and Fairfax, where two later died from their injuries.
The victims were named as Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. The condition of the third employee was not immediately disclosed.
Investigators believe Grant, who was a co-worker with an address in North Carolina, may have been involved in an altercation before the shooting. Police said they were still examining video footage and had not established how many shots were fired.
Grant left the scene in a vehicle and was later spotted by Virginia State Police travelling south on Interstate 81 in Augusta County. Troopers attempted to stop him at a rest area, but he briefly left his vehicle before getting back in and continuing south, prompting a pursuit.
He stopped again near mile marker 227 and got out with a firearm pointed at his head. A state police tactical team and negotiator were sent to the scene, but at about 10.30am Grant suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead. Virginia State Police said no force had been used by officers during the incident.
Manassas City Police Chief Douglas Keen said there had been no previous contact between police and Grant. Several other employees were at the site when the shooting took place.
Nearby schools were placed under lockdown as a precaution while officers searched for the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
