Two teenagers have been arrested over the fatal shooting of 40-year-old Andez Manning in Irving, Texas, after an alleged dispute over a stolen gun.
Police say Manning and his stepson went to the Devon on Northgate apartment complex last Thursday to confront two friends of the stepson about the weapon, according to an arrest warrant.
A second confrontation later took place near Esters Road. The two teenagers allegedly opened fire on Manning and his stepson as they sat in a vehicle, prompting Manning to return fire.
Manning was shot in the head. His stepson drove him to a nearby Family Dollar shop to seek help, but he later died in hospital on Saturday.
Teenagers identified by victim’s stepson
Irving police arrested 17-year-old Zayne Ryder Townsend and another juvenile. The pair were identified by Manning’s stepson, the warrant states.
Townsend was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while Manning remained on life support. It was not immediately clear when the charge would be upgraded to murder following his death.
Townsend declined to speak to detectives, according to the arrest warrant. The second suspect has not been publicly named because of their age.
Manning’s uncle, Charles Ahmad Mosley, said the confrontation should not have taken place and that the teenagers’ parents should have been contacted instead.
However, he also condemned the shooting and said the suspects should not have had access to firearms. Mosley, who served a prison sentence and later founded Taqwa Ministries, a non-profit organisation supporting inmates and former prisoners, said the incident had left both families facing devastating consequences.
