Walter Koenig, the actor best known for playing Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series, has died aged 90.
His representative said Koenig died of “old age” at his home in North Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter, Danielle, and his niece.
Zachery McGinnis, Koenig’s talent agent, said the actor’s work had left “a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world”.
“Walter helped inspire audiences with his optimism, humor, and adventurous spirit,” he said. “Beyond Star Trek, his long and distinguished career showcased his versatility as an actor and his genuine love for his craft.”

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the series, remembered Koenig as “a thoughtful man and a loyal friend”.
Takei said the pair had met “on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s” and remained friends for nearly six decades.
“Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man and a loyal friend,” he said.
“To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too. Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.”
Koenig joined Star Trek in 1967, after beginning his television career with appearances in programmes including General Hospital and I Spy.
The original series ran for 79 episodes over three seasons on NBC between 1966 and 1969. Koenig later returned as Chekov in several Star Trek films.
He also worked on numerous other projects, including a recurring role in the 1990s science-fiction series Babylon 5, while continuing to return to the Star Trek universe.
Koenig’s death leaves William Shatner, who played Captain James T Kirk, and Takei as the two surviving cast members of the original series.
Koenig married fellow actor Judy Levitt in 1965, and they remained together until her death in 2022. They had two children, Danielle and Andrew, who both worked in the entertainment industry; Andrew died in 2010 aged 41.
