Taylor Swift has become the youngest artist ever inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, receiving the honour at the organisation’s 56th anniversary gala in Tennessee.
The 36-year-old singer was inducted by country star Brad Paisley, with whom she toured early in her career. Swift used her acceptance speech to reflect on Nashville’s influence, the 20th anniversary of her debut album and a long-running prank-related joke between the pair.
Addressing Paisley, she said: “We’ve been estranged since 2007,” before explaining that he had taken a tour prank too far.
Swift recalled that Paisley had “filled my entire tour bus with live crickets, thousands of them”. She added: “For months I couldn’t sleep. All night I considered buying a pet lizard to eradicate the problem.”
She later joked that Paisley had done such an “amazing job” with his introduction that she was ready to “let bygones be bygones”.
Taylor Swift’s Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame speech
Swift, who attended with her mother Andrea, spoke warmly about the city where she developed as a songwriter and created her self-titled debut album in 2006.
“I am shocked and stunned to say that as of a couple days ago, that album is 20 years old,” she told the audience.
Describing Nashville as the place she had imagined visiting during her school years, Swift said: “It ended up being everything.”
She credited the city with giving her the foundations that allowed her to move between genres and work with songwriters around the world.
“The only reason that I’ve been able to have that kind of dexterity in my creative process is because of the fundamentals and the foundation that I learned here in Nashville,” she said.
Swift also reflected on the relationship between songwriting and fame, describing celebrity as “a byproduct of my love for music”. She said the attention could bring “daily random doses of chaos”, but that she had ways of finding her way back to “true north” when life felt bizarre.
“It’s not lost on me how crazy this is,” she said. “I will cherish it forever because Nashville is the place that honed and polished the thing about myself and the thing about my life that I am the most proud of and the most passionate about.”
Swift joined the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026 alongside Lyle Lovett, Bruce Channel, Shawn Camp and Lee Thomas Miller.
For the ceremony, she wore a strapless velvet floral mini dress by Raisa Vanessa with matching Jimmy Choo heels. Her shoulder-length hair was styled in loose waves, with her fringe framing her face.
The evening included a performance by Lainey Wilson, who sang Swift’s hit Love Story. Country singer Jamey Johnson also performed, while Brooks & Dunn’s Kix Brooks attended the gala.
Although Swift is best known for her pop music, she has recently revisited her country roots. Her song for Toy Story 5, I Knew It, I Knew You, topped the US country radio chart in September, giving her a first number one on the chart in 13 years.
Swift has also earned 14 Grammy Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award, and has been recognised as the highest-grossing live music artist and the world’s wealthiest female musician.
