Two people were detained near the Indiana state line after a shooting at an apartment in Mundelein, north of Chicago, left a man dead and a woman seriously wounded in what police believe was a targeted, domestic-related attack.
Two people have been taken into custody near the Illinois-Indiana state line following a shooting at an apartment in Mundelein, a suburb north of Chicago, that left a man dead and a woman seriously injured.
Police in Mundelein were called to a building on the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive, just off Route 45, at 11.40am on Tuesday. Inside, officers found two people with gunshot wounds. According to the Lake County sheriff’s office, the woman was taken to a nearby hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the man died after arriving at hospital.
Investigators believe the shooting was targeted and domestic in nature, the sheriff’s office said.
After obtaining a description of a suspect vehicle, Mundelein police circulated it to other forces. Illinois State Police tracked a car matching the description as far as the state line with Indiana, where it was stopped and a man and a woman were detained.
Back at the scene, the area around the building remained cordoned off well into the afternoon, with the investigation still active at 4pm – more than four hours after the shooting. Some residents found themselves unable to get home while inquiries continued. One of them, a woman named Kassandra who lives in the building where the shooting took place, said she had been kept waiting for an hour after returning from work despite initially being told the delay would be 30 minutes. She described the building as frequently troubled, saying there had been “a lot of chaos”, along with fights and arguments among those living there.
The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating alongside Mundelein police.
