Barcelona are reportedly exploring a move for Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with the Spanish international being considered as a possible alternative to Frenkie de Jong.
No formal offer has been made and the clubs have not entered negotiations, but Zubimendi is understood to have emerged as a potential target while Barcelona manager Hansi Flick assesses his midfield options.
Barcelona weigh up Martin Zubimendi move
The 27-year-old joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2025 and initially established himself as an important member of Mikel Arteta’s squad. His involvement has since declined as competition for places has increased.
Zubimendi has played just 89 minutes across Arsenal’s opening six Premier League matches, raising questions over his long-term role at the Emirates Stadium.
Barcelona could regard his composure in possession, positional discipline and ability to control the tempo as a good fit for Flick’s midfield. His experience in Spanish football may also help him adapt to the manager’s tactical approach.
Arsenal, however, would be under no immediate pressure to sell. The club paid approximately €70 million to sign Zubimendi and his contract runs until 2030, leaving them in a strong negotiating position.
Barcelona’s plans may also depend on De Jong’s situation. The Dutch midfielder is recovering from a knee injury and faces increased competition from Rodri and Pedri following his absence, despite remaining under contract until 2029.
The Catalan club must first assess De Jong’s recovery and determine whether another substantial midfield investment is required. For now, Zubimendi remains a player under consideration rather than an immediate transfer target, with his playing time at Arsenal likely to influence any future move.
