Miley Cyrus has said she received a sign from her late godmother, Dolly Parton, after asking the singer to make the lights flicker in her home.
Addressing the crowd during her Sunday night performance at the Hollywood Bowl, Cyrus described how she felt Parton’s presence after her death from cancer in August.
Cyrus said she keeps a Dolly Parton mannequin in her bedroom, which was given to her as a Christmas present by the country music icon. One night, she played a video of Parton performing “Jolene”, lit a candle and placed a flower beside the mannequin.
She then quietly asked: “If you’re here right now, flicker the lights.”
According to Cyrus, the lights in the entire hallway began flickering. She said her fiancé, Maxx Morando, witnessed the incident but did not know what she had said to Parton beforehand.
Cyrus told the audience she could feel Parton’s presence while performing on stage, describing it as a comforting feeling.
The singer has made several emotional remarks about her godmother during recent performances, but this was the first time she had spoken publicly about what she described as a supernatural experience.
Cyrus also responded to criticism from some fans who complained that she had not sung every lyric during her first Hollywood Bowl show.
As she began another song, she said: “Oh I forgot I’m supposed to sing every fucking line.”
