France protests descended into disorder over the weekend as hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets, with videos showing burning vehicles, smoke and clashes across several cities.
Footage appeared to show protesters looting and setting fire to cars as demonstrations that began among students spread to wider anger over living costs and public services.
The movement initially focused on poor school conditions, teacher shortages and inadequate facilities, with high school pupils at the forefront of the protests.
In Paris, demonstrators blocked access to the Louvre, while scenes elsewhere showed the disruption caused by the unrest.
One video showed tourists attempting to move their luggage through the streets as demonstrators kicked gas canisters away from them.
Another clip showed a couple sitting at a café, drinking and smoking while fires burned in the background.
Public buildings were also targeted. Limoges city hall was reported to have caught fire, a tourist office in Lyon was torched and Marseille city hall was covered in graffiti.
Trump weighs in on France protests
President Trump commented on the unrest over the weekend, blaming immigration policies and urging France to close its borders.
The protests were reported in several cities as demonstrators continued to express anger over the cost of living and what they described as insufficient public services.
