Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring Barcelona defender Gerard Martin, with several European clubs considering whether to pursue the versatile 24-year-old in an upcoming transfer window.
Fussball News reports that Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Chelsea are also tracking Martin, who has earned greater responsibility at Barcelona through his performances under head coach Hansi Flick.
Liverpool and Tottenham assess Gerard Martin
Martin’s ability to operate at left-back or centre-back has increased his appeal to clubs seeking defensive depth. His composure in possession and defensive awareness have also made him a useful member of Barcelona’s squad.
Liverpool are assessing options to strengthen their back line and maintain cover across several competitions. Tottenham are likewise considering defensive reinforcements, with Martin’s flexibility potentially offering them an additional tactical option.
Neither Premier League club is understood to have made a formal offer. Inter Milan has reportedly made initial enquiries about the defender’s contract.
Barcelona keen to keep defender
Barcelona are not expected to make Martin’s departure straightforward. He is under contract until June 2028, while the club are reportedly considering extending his deal until 2030 or 2031.
Martin’s current release clause is believed to be €100 million. However, reports suggest Barcelona may need to offer between €55 million and €60 million to encourage him to enter negotiations.
Flick is understood to value Martin’s versatility and favour retaining him at Barcelona. Liverpool and Tottenham could therefore be forced to consider alternative defensive targets, although the defender is likely to remain on their radar as the next transfer window approaches.
