Ezri Konsa’s assured Arsenal performance against Napoli has strengthened the case that Mikel Arteta’s summer recruitment has added valuable depth to his defence.
The England international started alongside Gabriel Magalhães at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on Wednesday night, helping Arsenal secure a 1-0 Champions League victory in their opening league-phase fixture.
While Martin Ødegaard’s 75th-minute strike settled the contest, Konsa’s composure at the back was central to Arsenal’s control of the match. The centre-back looked comfortable receiving possession under pressure and consistently chose the right option when building from deep.

According to figures highlighted by Sky Sports’ Nick Wright, Konsa has attempted 106 passes since joining Arsenal and misplaced only two. That represents an accuracy of about 98.1 per cent across his opening appearances.
His latest display in Naples offered another clear example of that reliability. Arsenal dominated possession, created the majority of the game’s chances and limited Napoli to just five shots, while Arteta’s side registered 26 attempts of their own.
The underlying figures were even more emphatic. Arsenal recorded an expected-goals total of 4.05 compared with Napoli’s 0.22, underlining how effectively the visitors controlled the match at both ends of the pitch.
Konsa’s influence was not limited to his work in possession. With William Saliba unavailable, Arsenal needed the former Aston Villa defender to step into a demanding European away fixture without disrupting the defensive structure. He did so alongside Gabriel, with the pair helping to keep Napoli away from dangerous areas for long periods.
That combination of calm distribution, sound positioning and recovery pace is precisely what Arteta requires from his centre-backs. Arsenal’s defenders are expected to do more than simply clear danger; they must draw opponents out, resist pressure and help the team progress up the pitch.
Konsa appears increasingly comfortable with those responsibilities. His passing figures are striking, but his wider contribution against Napoli suggested Arsenal have gained a defender capable of maintaining their standards when the pressure is highest.
Ødegaard’s late finish ultimately provided the decisive moment, but Konsa’s composed display helped lay the foundation for a disciplined away win. After reaching last season’s Champions League final on the strength of their defensive consistency, Arsenal may now have even greater depth in that area.
