Barcelona have renewed their interest in Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall as the Catalan club consider strengthening their midfield during the January transfer window.
The Sweden international’s limited playing time under Roberto De Zerbi is understood to have attracted attention from several major European clubs. Bergvall has found it difficult to establish himself as a regular starter since Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes joined Tottenham during the summer.
Barcelona interest in Lucas Bergvall grows
Barcelona previously followed Bergvall during his time at Djurgarden, but Tottenham won the race for his signature in 2024. The Spanish side are now weighing up another move, with his technical quality, athleticism and versatility believed to have impressed them.
His potential could appeal to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick as he seeks to maintain a balance between youth and experience. The club already have a number of promising young midfielders, including Pedri, Gavi and Marc Bernal, but Bergvall is viewed as a possible long-term investment.
Barcelona are not alone in monitoring the 20-year-old’s position. Napoli have also registered an interest, while Juventus are reportedly considering a loan move in January.
Tottenham reluctant to lose midfielder
Tottenham strengthened their position last month by securing Bergvall on a new contract running until 2031. The north London club are reluctant to sanction his departure and continue to hold him in high regard.
However, his lack of regular opportunities could become a concern if it persists over the coming months. Barcelona may seek to take advantage of any uncertainty over his role, although persuading Tottenham to negotiate is expected to prove difficult.
Bergvall’s playing time during the remainder of the campaign is likely to influence how the situation develops. Continued frustration over starts could lead to increased interest from leading European clubs and a significant transfer contest in 2027.
