Susan Collins is seeking to distance herself from Donald Trump’s trade policies while making the economic interests of Maine central to her bid for a sixth term in the US Senate. In an interview with Politico, the Republican senator discussed the president, tariffs and the increasingly competitive political battle in Maine, where she faces Democratic nominee Troy Jackson in November’s midterm elections. Collins has repeatedly criticised Trump’s decision to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian imports, warning that the measures could raise prices for families and put businesses in the state under further pressure. The latest tariffs include a 50 per…

Manchester City’s pursuit of Jennifer Echegini has been dealt a setback after Paris St-Germain rejected several offers for the Nigeria midfielder. Echegini, 25, is regarded as an important member of the PSG squad and the French club are unwilling to sanction her departure with a year still remaining on her contract. The player joined PSG two years ago after a season with Juventus. She spent much of her youth career in England and has since established herself as a Nigeria international. Echegini scored the winning goal in last year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco, helping Nigeria secure…

A suspected hand grenade explosion near Augsburg’s main railway station injured two teenagers and shattered windows early on Wednesday morning. The blast happened at about 3.15am local time in a passageway on Bahnhofstrasse, opposite the station in the southern German city. Donald Trump is escalating efforts to bring down high petrol prices in the United States, as rising household costs threaten to damage Republican prospects in November’s midterm elections. The president was due to meet refiners and fuel retailers at the White House on Tuesday to discuss ways of reducing the cost of petrol and diesel. Companies expected to be represented included Valero Energy, Marathon Petroleum and PBF Energy, according to people familiar with the plans. The administration has also moved to increase domestic supplies. The Environmental Protection Agency said a temporary waiver allowing the sale of a higher-volatility summer petrol…
Gary Neville has urged Mikel Arteta to leave Christos Tzolis out of Arsenal’s starting line-up for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea and replace him with Eberechi Eze. The advice follows Tzolis’s difficult first half in Monday’s 1-0 victory at Aston Villa, where the summer signing struggled to make an impact before being withdrawn at the interval. He was also booked for a foul on John McGinn before Arteta made the change. Gary Neville backs Eberechi Eze to start for Arsenal Eze took Tzolis’s place after the break and helped Arsenal produce a more forceful attacking display. The former Crystal…
Leaked cabinet documents show that the entire Allan ministry was told about Victoria’s secret public transport levy almost two years before it became public, raising fresh questions over how the charge was kept from commuters. The so-called rail improvement charge added 1 per cent to public transport fares each year on top of inflation-linked increases. It began in January 2025 and was intended to help fund the Suburban Rail Loop and other major infrastructure projects. The documents indicate ministers were briefed about the levy in November 2024, when the government reaffirmed the measure as part of its funding strategy for…

The man is believed to have been in his 40s and has not yet been formally…
Japan’s 10-year government bond yield has climbed above 3 per cent for the first time since 1996, prompting signs that Japanese investors are beginning to redirect money from overseas debt back into their home market. The shift is being watched closely across global financial markets because Japan has long been one of the world’s biggest buyers of foreign government bonds, including US Treasuries, French debt and Australian securities. As bond prices fell and yields rose worldwide on Wednesday, traders said expectations of weaker Japanese demand were adding to pressure on international borrowing costs. There has been no evidence of a…
