Mark Schwarzer praised Víctor Muñoz for making an immediate impact as Liverpool recovered from back-to-back defeats with a 3-1 Premier League win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The substitute helped create Alexander Isak’s late goal, with his work on the right contributing to Liverpool’s decisive third strike in the 89th minute.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, former Chelsea and Fulham goalkeeper Schwarzer highlighted Muñoz’s pace and movement after the young forward was introduced.
“Another really good goal from Liverpool. Victor Munoz down the right hand side, he’s made a difference since he came on,” Schwarzer said.
“He played the ball across the box, Florian Wirtz does well to lay it off to Alexander Isak, who picks his spot and puts it past Dean Henderson. Liverpool deserve it.”
Víctor Muñoz makes difference for Liverpool against Crystal Palace
Muñoz advanced down the right before sending a dangerous ball into the penalty area. Wirtz then showed awareness to lay it off for Isak, who finished beyond Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
The move involved three Liverpool attackers, but Schwarzer felt Muñoz’s direct running had provided an important attacking outlet after his introduction.
Liverpool had been under pressure after a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal at Anfield was followed by a 3-2 Champions League loss to Fenerbahce. The result against Palace gave Andoni Iraola’s side a much-needed response before the November international break.
Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a header from Dominik Szoboszlai’s delivery. Wirtz doubled the advantage on the hour after an attacking move involving Ronald Araújo and Bradley Barcola.
Isak then added Liverpool’s third late on, although Palace scored a consolation goal from a contentious penalty shortly before full time.
Alexander Isak closes gap on Erling Haaland
The goal was Isak’s seventh in the Premier League this season, leaving him two behind Manchester City forward Erling Haaland, who has nine in the campaign’s Golden Boot standings.
Although the Sweden international has not always been at his most influential in Liverpool’s attacking play, his goalscoring record remains strong as he continues to challenge near the top of the league’s scoring charts.
