A 37-year-old woman died after falling from a moving car and being struck by another vehicle on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in New York, police said.
The incident happened at about 2.26am on Sunday on the westbound carriageway near Exit 28, close to the Brooklyn Bridge.
According to the NYPD, the woman was travelling in the rear of a Toyota Highlander when she opened the door and fell into the carriageway. She was then hit by a westbound Hyundai Elantra.
The two vehicles did not collide with each other. The Highlander was being driven by a 33-year-old man, while the Hyundai driver was a 29-year-old man.
Police said the SUV had New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission plates. Both drivers stayed at the scene and spoke to investigators.
Emergency responders found the woman suffering from severe trauma and pronounced her dead at the scene.
Her identity has not been released as police work to notify her family. No arrests have been made and the circumstances surrounding why she opened the car door remain under investigation.
