Brad Pitt appeared at a screening of his new film Heart of the Beast in Los Angeles on Tuesday, 8 September, projecting a relaxed image as attention continued to focus on his strained relationship with several of his children.
The 62-year-old actor took part in a discussion at Paramount Studios wearing a distressed indigo Maison Margiela sweatshirt, layered over two thinner tops. The garment featured white paint marks and the fashion house’s name stylised on the hem.
Pitt completed the deliberately casual look with patched acid-wash jeans, lime-green trainers, a navy fedora and squared aviator-style glasses. He also wore a neatly trimmed salt-and-pepper beard.
The appearance came shortly after Angelina Jolie spoke publicly about her close relationship with their children in an interview with L’Officiel USA.
Jolie said her children “know me pretty well” and “know all sides of me”, adding that she was proud they had grown into independent individuals.
“As a parent, you try to do many things, but you also try to not get in the way of this human being who has a life separate from yours and so much potential in their own mind,” she said. “You want to make sure that you support them.”
Pitt and Jolie share six children: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne. In recent years, several of the children have taken steps to remove Pitt from their surnames, with Vivienne the latest to formalise the change.
Vivienne, 18, recently placed a notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal announcing that she had petitioned to change her name from Jolie-Pitt to Jolie. Court documents said the application was made for personal reasons.
Jolie also discussed working alongside Maddox and Pax on her films, describing herself as “just Mom, wanting to be around her family”. She said the family had enjoyed spending time together during the making of Without Blood in Italy, while living in separate accommodation.
The former couple married in 2014 and separated in 2016. Their divorce and related disputes have involved allegations of abuse, which Pitt has denied. An FBI investigation into an incident on a private aircraft was closed without charges being filed.
The pair remain involved in a legal dispute over Château Miraval, the French winery they once owned together. Pitt has also previously said he stopped drinking after their separation, before later acknowledging that he had begun drinking again after seven years of sobriety.
Heart of the Beast, directed by David Ayer, follows a former Special Forces officer and his combat dog after they survive a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. Paramount is due to release the film in cinemas in the United States on 25 September.
