Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Benfica right-back Daniel Banjaqui, with manager Xabi Alonso seeking defensive reinforcements before the January transfer window. The 18-year-old is also being monitored by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool.
Banjaqui has made the step up to Benfica’s senior squad and is understood to have impressed with his technical quality, attacking approach and physical attributes. Chelsea see the teenager as a player who could develop into a long-term asset.
Chelsea face competition for Daniel Banjaqui
The interest comes after another injury setback for Chelsea captain Reece James. The England international has undergone minor knee surgery and is expected to be unavailable for up to three months, leaving Alonso with reduced options at right-back.
Malo Gusto and summer arrival Marco Palestra remain available to the manager, but Chelsea are considering adding further cover. The club’s recruitment strategy has focused heavily on young players with potential, a profile Banjaqui is believed to fit.
Benfica, however, are reluctant to lose one of their most promising emerging talents and would prefer him to continue his development in Portugal. His contract is reportedly protected by a release clause of about £38 million.
That figure could force Chelsea to make a significant investment if they decide to pursue the defender. Arsenal and Liverpool are also said to be tracking Banjaqui, increasing the competition for his signature.
Chelsea may therefore need to act decisively if they want to secure the teenager, although they must first determine whether triggering the reported clause represents the right investment ahead of the winter window.
