Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold if the England international becomes available, with the club understood to be assessing options for the position.
Simon Phillips reports that Alexander-Arnold could emerge as a target for the Blues, potentially opening the door to a return to the Premier League for the former Liverpool player.
The 28-year-old established himself as one of the leading players in his position during his time at Liverpool, although his spell at Real Madrid has not so far developed as expected. Chelsea are therefore keeping watch on the possibility that his time in Spain could prove relatively brief.
Why Chelsea could consider Alexander-Arnold
Chelsea already have Reece James, Malo Gusto and Marco Palestra among their right-back options, meaning a move for Alexander-Arnold would not necessarily represent an immediate priority.
However, James’ struggles with injuries could encourage the club to consider a new first-choice option. Alexander-Arnold would also bring considerable experience and a record of winning at the highest level to a Chelsea squad that is regarded as lacking players of that profile.
His potential role under manager Xabi Alonso would also need to be assessed. Alonso generally favours a 3-4-3 system, with Pedro Neto having adapted to a wing-back role under the Spanish coach.
It is unclear whether Alexander-Arnold would fit naturally into that system as a right-back or wing-back. Chelsea could also consider using him in midfield, a position he has occupied for England, particularly following Enzo Fernandez’s departure in the summer.
That would not necessarily be Alexander-Arnold’s strongest position, but his versatility could broaden the appeal of a Chelsea transfer if the opportunity to bring him back to England arises.
