Jackson Chourio struck a two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 to take a 2-0 lead in their National League Division Series.
The Padres led 3-2 entering the final innings at American Family Field, but Milwaukee rallied against San Diego closer Mason Miller. Miller issued three walks before Chourio lined a 2-2 fastball into centre field, bringing home Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick.
Chourio’s decisive hit followed a late defensive highlight, as the Brewers left fielder made a leaping catch at the wall to deny Fernando Tatis Jr. a potential extra-base hit in the top of the ninth.
MLB said Chourio, aged 22 years and 207 days, became the youngest player to record a postseason walk-off run batted in since Andruw Jones in the 1999 National League Championship Series.
How the Brewers overturned the Padres
San Diego scored first through Ty France’s RBI single in the opening inning and extended its advantage to 2-0 in the fifth. Milwaukee responded when Sal Frelick drove in Yelich, before Garrett Mitchell scored on a pair of throwing errors in the seventh.
France restored the Padres’ two-run advantage with his second RBI single of the game, but the Brewers bullpen kept San Diego scoreless over the final three innings. Trevor Megill earned the win after pitching a perfect ninth, while Miller was charged with the defeat.
Milwaukee starter Logan Henderson allowed two runs, one earned, over five innings. JoJo Romero, Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby combined with Megill to limit the Padres to five hits.
The series now moves to San Diego for Game 3 on Tuesday, October 6, with the Padres needing to win to prevent the Brewers from completing a sweep.
