A 40-year-old man was fatally shot at a sports complex in Dublin, California, with police arresting his elderly parents-in-law in connection with the killing.
Jonathan McKinsey was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the car park at Dublin Sports Grounds shortly after 3pm on Saturday, September 26. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dublin Police Services said officers located and detained Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, within minutes of arriving at the scene. The married couple, who are McKinsey’s parents-in-law, were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
Witnesses told local media that a masked man and woman allegedly took turns shooting McKinsey before remaining close to the park. Police have not publicly confirmed those details, and the circumstances that led to the shooting remain under investigation.
The sports grounds, at 6700 Dublin Boulevard, include sports fields and children’s facilities. Police said there was no outstanding suspect and no known continuing threat to public safety.
McKinsey was the director of engineering for games at The New York Times, where he had worked since 2023. The newspaper confirmed his employment but declined to comment further.
Police have not disclosed a possible motive. Local reports said McKinsey and his wife had been involved in divorce and child-custody proceedings, but investigators have not said whether those disputes were connected to the killing.
Dublin Police Services said witnesses and members of the public had helped officers identify and detain the suspects quickly. Detectives are continuing to examine evidence as the investigation proceeds.
