Fairfax County supervisors are due to vote on funding for high-school crossing guards after a series of collisions involving pupils, including the death of a 13-year-old pedestrian.
The board is considering using carry-over funds to restore 11 crossing-guard posts at 10 schools for the remainder of the academic year. County staff have recommended an allocation of $707,908 as part of the review of the county’s revised budget. High-school crossing guards were removed from the budget adopted in May, cutting 13 positions and about $1.89 million from the Fairfax County Police Department. Crossing guards continued to operate at primary and middle schools, while temporary cover was restored at several high schools after concerns were raised at the start of the new term. The issue intensified after a South Lakes High School pupil was struck by a car on 1 September while walking to school. The student suffered minor injuries and was recovering, according to Fairfax County Public Schools. A county supervisor said the crash occurred near a school entrance where a crossing guard had not previously been stationed, but argued that it underlined wider safety concerns. Police have also linked two fatal crashes to drivers failing to yield while turning right. In one case, a 13-year-old was hit and killed by a lorry leaving the Turnpike Shopping Centre on Pickett Road.
Fairfax County Police are responding with Operation Right Turn, which will increase enforcement around junctions and pedestrian crossings. Drivers who fail to give way to pedestrians could be fined $50.
The proposed funding would cover crossings at Annandale, Centreville, Chantilly, Edison, McLean, Oakton, South County, South Lakes, West Springfield and West Potomac high schools. The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider the measure on Tuesday, 15 September, following a public hearing on the county’s carry-over budget.
