Federal agents have searched the home of Democratic US representative Ilhan Omar as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, according to people familiar with the matter.
The search was carried out by agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), two people said. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to discuss the investigation publicly.
The US Justice Department said HSI agents had executed a judicially authorised search warrant in the Washington DC area. It did not disclose further details, saying only: “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.”
The precise focus of the investigation remains unclear. Fox News Digital reported, citing unidentified sources, that the search followed a criminal fraud investigation into Ms Omar’s immigration paperwork, which was completed by her late father when she was a child.
Ms Omar, 44, represents Minnesota’s 5th District, including Minneapolis. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and is associated with “The Squad”, a group of female lawmakers known for progressive views and outspoken opposition to President Donald Trump.
