A woman was in critical condition after Detroit firefighters broke down a door to rescue her from an apartment fire on the city’s west side early on Wednesday.
The blaze began shortly after midnight at a multi-unit complex in the 17000 block of Plymouth Road, the Detroit Fire Department said.
Crews contained the fire to a single flat after bringing it under control. Several residents were evacuated while emergency operations were under way, but were later allowed to return.
Three Detroit Police Department officers suffered smoke-inhalation injuries during the response.
The woman was handed to police officers, who took her to the courtyard before she was transferred to emergency medical crews. She was then taken to a local hospital for treatment.
“We had to break down a door and handed her off to DPD, who brought her to the courtyard and EMS while our crews searched for more victims,” a Detroit Fire Department spokesperson said.
