An influencer was overpowered by a remote-controlled humanoid robot during a human versus robot boxing match in San Francisco, in an event billed as the first of its kind.
Frankie LaPenna faced the approximately 6ft machine in front of spectators at a fight venue, with the robot’s glowing red eyes adding to the dramatic spectacle.
Before the bout began, a man standing behind LaPenna told him: “I’m scared for you,” while examining his mechanical opponent.
LaPenna initially appeared to hold his own, landing several punches and forcing the robot backwards. The contest then shifted as the machine began attacking with punches and kicks, leaving the influencer being repeatedly struck.
The match was organised by REK, a US robotics company promoting a virtual reality game in which people compete against remote-controlled humanoid robots.
The bout comes amid continuing debate over whether artificial intelligence and robotics could eventually pose a threat to humanity. On the evidence of the contest, the robot had the clear advantage in the ring.
