The Indigo Girls’ tour bus driver was killed in a crash in South Carolina, prompting the folk-rock duo to cancel and postpone upcoming performances.
The driver, identified by the band as Kirk, was at the wheel when the bus collided with a disabled tractor-trailer on Interstate 20 at about 6am on Friday, authorities said.
He was the only person aboard the bus at the time. Indigo Girls members Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, along with their crew, were not on board.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Ray and Saliers said Kirk had driven them safely for thousands of miles and had become a much-loved member of their touring family. “He was a joyful constant in our lives, and we will miss him dearly,” they said.
The duo cancelled their Saturday performance in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and postponed Sunday’s show in Wilmington, North Carolina. Decisions about further dates have yet to be made.
The singers said they intended to return to the road when they were ready, while remembering the man who had helped make their concerts possible over the years.
