Mariah Carey has won a defamation lawsuit brought by her brother after a judge dismissed his case over claims made in her 2020 memoir.
Morgan Carey sued his sister over passages in The Meaning of Mariah Carey which suggested he had sold cocaine and been violent during their childhood.
The judge ruled that Morgan had not met the legal requirements to bring the claim, finding that he had not sufficiently pleaded actual malice. The ruling stated: “The Court finds that Plaintiff has not sufficiently pleaded actual malice on the part of Defendant.”
The judge also said Morgan “fails to provide any proof” that Mariah knowingly lied about him in the book.
Mariah Carey’s attorney, John Rosenberg, said: “Ms. Carey is gratified that the Court recognized that her memoir addresses significant issues of public interest and dismissed her brother’s defamation claims in their entirety.”
Morgan’s attorney said he plans to appeal the dismissal.
