Liverpool have decided against loaning Giovanni Leoni out in January, despite interest from Juventus in taking the young defender back to Serie A.
The 19-year-old centre-back is continuing his recovery and has yet to return to full Premier League involvement. However, Liverpool regard him as part of their first-team plans rather than a player who should develop elsewhere.
Liverpool reject January loan for Giovanni Leoni
Reports indicate that the club are firmly opposed to a temporary departure during the winter transfer window. Juventus remain interested, but Liverpool are not prepared to entertain the proposal.
Leoni is understood to be viewed as an important part of the club’s long-term project, while he could be needed by Andoni Iraola during the second half of the season.
Liverpool are hopeful the defender can return to Premier League action during October. The intention is to rebuild his match fitness gradually instead of exposing him immediately to a heavy workload.
A move away in January could disrupt that progress just as Leoni begins to regain his rhythm. Liverpool also want to retain their defensive options, with the squad potentially facing demanding commitments across the Premier League, domestic cups and Europe later in the campaign.
Juventus are expected to continue monitoring the Italian, meaning their interest may remain into future transfer windows. For now, though, Liverpool have made clear that Leoni’s immediate future lies at Anfield.
The club’s priority will be to manage his minutes carefully and assess his progress before the end of the season, rather than interrupt his recovery with a loan move.
