Liverpool have appointed Julian Ward as their new sporting director, bringing the former occupant of the role back from his position as Fenway Sports Group’s technical director.
The 45-year-old succeeds Richard Hughes, who left the club less than a month ago after informing Liverpool earlier in the year that he wanted a new challenge. Hughes remained in post through the summer transfer window before departing for Al-Hilal.

Ward previously held the sporting director position during the 2022-23 season, having first joined Liverpool’s recruitment department in 2012. He later established and oversaw the club’s loan pathways operation before becoming assistant sporting director.
After leaving the role in 2023, Ward returned to FSG as technical director. His responsibilities included recruitment, academy development and wider football strategy, while he also contributed to Liverpool’s academy redevelopment plans.
As part of that work, Ward visited more than 25 European clubs to examine their approaches and identify best practice.
His return provides continuity for a football structure that has undergone several changes. Michael Edwards left his senior FSG position earlier this summer, while Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as head coach in June.
Ward is already familiar with Liverpool’s recruitment model, academy system and data-led approach, as well as the club’s internal relationships. His appointment therefore restores a figure with extensive knowledge of the organisation as Liverpool continue their long-term squad planning.
The move also gives Ward the opportunity to take on the sporting director role with greater experience of FSG’s wider football operation than during his first spell.
