Jeremy Jacquet’s France debut earned widespread praise after the Liverpool defender helped Les Bleus secure a 1-0 Nations League victory over Belgium.
The 21-year-old started at centre-back in his first full senior international appearance and produced a composed display against a dangerous Belgium side.
Jeremy Jacquet impresses on France debut
Jacquet made a strong contribution defensively, winning four tackles – more than any other player on the pitch – while his six successful duels ranked second overall.
He was also assured in possession. The Liverpool defender completed 69 of 75 passes, including 10 into the final third, as he helped France build attacks from deep.
His performance included seven defensive contributions, three clearances, four recoveries and five ground duels won. He also won his only aerial duel and recorded 88 touches during the match.
The display prompted immediate recognition in France, with Get French Football News highlighting Jacquet’s authority at the back during the game.
“A word on Jérémy Jacquet. The Liverpool centre-back has picked up where he left off on Merseyside with a determined display of defensive domination. He simply belongs at the highest level,” the publication wrote.
Liverpool see signs of a long-term defensive leader
Jacquet’s emergence has already attracted attention at Liverpool since his summer move to Anfield. He has been praised for his physical presence, aerial strength and calmness when bringing the ball out from defence.
His first senior start for France came as Virgil van Dijk entered the final year of his Liverpool contract, prompting suggestions that Jacquet could eventually become a long-term successor in the Reds’ defence.
The former Rennes player’s assured performance against Belgium strengthened the impression that he has the qualities to establish himself at the highest level for both club and country.
