Liverpool are reportedly planning to strengthen their midfield in the summer of 2027, a development that could further cloud Alexis Mac Allister’s long-term future at Anfield.
The Argentina international remains an important player for Andoni Iraola’s side, but talkSPORT has reported that the club are considering another addition in his position. Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is understood to be among the names being discussed.
Any new arrival would increase competition for places, particularly with Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai having already agreed fresh contracts and appearing to occupy prominent positions in Liverpool’s long-term plans.
Mac Allister’s Liverpool future remains uncertain
Mac Allister, 27, is contracted to Liverpool until 2028, meaning the club are under no immediate pressure to sell or renegotiate his deal. However, his frustration at not being offered an extension has prompted renewed speculation over his future.
The midfielder recently admitted he was “very sad” after learning Liverpool were not prepared to offer him a new contract, especially after Gravenberch and Szoboszlai had secured improved terms. He also revealed that there had been opportunities for him to leave during the summer.
Despite that uncertainty, Mac Allister has continued to underline his value on the pitch.
He scored the decisive goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League comeback against Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, striking from outside the penalty area in the 50th minute to complete the turnaround after Dominik Szoboszlai had levelled.
The victory gave Iraola a winning start to his first Champions League campaign as a coach, while Mac Allister’s performance ensured that Liverpool’s recruitment plans were not the only talking point surrounding the midfielder.
His display was also praised by Steven Gerrard, who told TNT Sports that the player could yet earn a new contract if he maintains that level of performance.
Mac Allister’s composure in possession, positional intelligence and ability to dictate play from deep remain valuable qualities for Liverpool. His goal against Atlético also demonstrated the attacking threat he can provide when matches are finely balanced.
The possible signing of another midfielder would not necessarily mean Mac Allister is destined to leave. Liverpool will need a deep squad to compete in the Premier League and Champions League, and competition for places is inevitable at a club operating at the highest level.
But the absence of a new contract, combined with plans to recruit in his position, means the situation will continue to attract attention. For now, Mac Allister’s response has been emphatic: he is attempting to make Liverpool’s decision as difficult as possible through his performances.
