Zohran Mamdani has hailed a wave of historic Democratic election victories across the US, saying the results mark “a new day for America”.
The New York mayor was speaking outside City Hall after a series of wins that increased diversity among elected officials. Mamdani said the country now had representatives who “actually represent America”.
Among the notable results was Gina Hinojosa’s victory in Texas, where she became the state’s first Latina governor after preventing incumbent Greg Abbott from winning a fourth term.
In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers for a Senate seat, becoming the first Muslim US senator.
The Democratic gains also included Keisha Lance Bottoms’ election in Georgia. She became the first Black woman to be elected governor in the United States.
Deb Haaland was elected governor in New Mexico, making her the country’s first Native American governor.
Chris Pappas of New Hampshire also won a Senate seat, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate.
