Trey Nyoni became Liverpool’s second-youngest Champions League goalscorer after marking his first senior goal for the club against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.
The 19-year-old midfielder struck in the 25th minute, meeting a loose ball with a first-time volley from the edge of the penalty area to put Liverpool ahead.
Nyoni’s effort came after Rio Ngumoha had beaten several challenges before his initial attempt was blocked. Dominik Szoboszlai then kept the move alive with a cross, which Fenerbahçe could only direct towards Nyoni.
The shot took a slight deflection on its way past goalkeeper Ederson, but the goal secured Nyoni a place in Liverpool’s European record books.
Nyoni moves behind only Alexander-Arnold
At 19 years and 127 days, Nyoni is behind only Trent Alexander-Arnold in Liverpool’s list of youngest Champions League goalscorers.
Alexander-Arnold was 19 years and 10 days old when he scored against Maribor in 2017. Harvey Elliott is third on the list after finding the net against Rangers aged 19 years and 191 days, followed by David N’Gog and Curtis Jones.
The milestone draws a comparison with Alexander-Arnold, who also made an impression in Europe as a teenager before becoming a key figure in Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League successes.
Nyoni remains at an early stage of his senior career, although his performances this season have made him one of the club’s most discussed young prospects.
Andoni Iraola has continued to give opportunities to Liverpool’s emerging players, with both Nyoni and Ngumoha making important contributions against Fenerbahçe.
Nyoni’s progress has also reportedly led Liverpool to consider his long-term future, with discussions over a new contract said to be under way.
