Trey Nyoni scored his first senior goal for Liverpool with a superb volley during Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.
The 19-year-old midfielder broke the deadlock in the 25th minute after Rio Ngumoha carried the ball into the penalty area. Ngumoha’s shot was blocked before a cross from Dominik Szoboszlai was only partially cleared to the edge of the box.
Nyoni met the dropping ball first time, striking a powerful volley beyond Ederson. The effort took a slight deflection, wrong-footing the goalkeeper as it found the net.
Young Liverpool players make their mark in Istanbul
Ngumoha, 18, had already posed a consistent threat on the left flank, using his pace and direct dribbling to trouble the Fenerbahçe defence.
The performance continued the faith Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has shown in the club’s academy players during their European campaign, with the team’s younger players producing decisive moments on the Champions League stage.
Liverpool’s advantage lasted only four minutes. Fenerbahçe won a free-kick outside the area and Mason Greenwood’s effort deflected off the Liverpool wall, sending Alisson Becker the wrong way and bringing the Turkish side level.
