Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel is expected to join Real Madrid in January after choosing the Spanish club despite interest from several leading European sides.
The 16-year-old attacker has emerged as one of the most highly regarded prospects in United’s academy, although he is yet to make a senior appearance for the club.
David Ornstein reported that Gabriel is set to move to the Bernabéu on a long-term contract, subject to FIFA regulations. United attempted to retain the youngster, but he has opted to leave Old Trafford.
“JJ Gabriel expected to sign for Real Madrid from Manchester United in Jan. Interest from likes of PSG, Barcelona, Bayern Munich + MUFC tried to retain but 16yo attacker chose RMFC & set to join on long-term contract subject to FIFA regs,” Ornstein said.
Real Madrid beat competition for Manchester United prospect
Gabriel had previously been linked with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, while Bayern Munich were also reported to be interested in the England youth prospect. Barcelona were among the other clubs named as having monitored his situation.
The move represents a significant loss for Manchester United, who have been unable to convince one of their most promising academy players to remain at the club before making his first-team debut.
Gabriel is understood to have been attracted by the opportunity to continue his development in Madrid, with the proposed transfer set to bring an end to his time in United’s academy.
