Liverpool’s Champions League campaign suffered its first setback as Fenerbahce came from behind twice to win 3-2 in Istanbul.
Trey Nyoni gave Liverpool the lead with his first professional goal, but the advantage lasted only four minutes before Mason Greenwood’s free-kick deflected in off Jeremy Jacquet.
Andoni Iraola made five changes from the side beaten by Arsenal three days earlier, leaving Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz among those initially rested. Nyoni retained his place and marked another step in his breakthrough season with a deflected volley that wrong-footed Ederson.
Liverpool regained control after Isak, Wirtz and Cody Gakpo were introduced. Gakpo’s cross found Isak unmarked inside the six-yard box, and the Sweden international headed in with his first touch to restore the visitors’ lead.
Fenerbahce responded again, with a defensive mix-up between Gakpo and Alisson allowing Archie Brown to tap home. The hosts then completed the turnaround when Vedat Muriqi converted a high cross with a header.
The defeat ends Liverpool’s perfect start to the European campaign after four matches of the eight-game league phase. It also gives Fenerbahce their first Champions League victory of the season.
Liverpool had earlier survived several warnings, with Fenerbahce hitting the crossbar and Alisson making a smart save before half-time. Ederson also denied Barcola at the near post, while Virgil van Dijk saw a free header go straight at the goalkeeper.
But Liverpool’s defensive problems proved decisive after the interval, as Fenerbahce punished two further lapses to claim a notable victory in Istanbul.
