Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are monitoring Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic, whose prolific start to the season has increased expectations that he could secure a major move.
The 23-year-old has scored six goals in his first seven appearances in all competitions this term, having previously found the net 15 times for Freiburg last season.
Manchester United have discussed Matanovic internally, while Arsenal and Chelsea are understood to have regularly sent officials to watch him this season.
“Matanovic looks like someone who’s really ready to explode this season. He’s 23 now, entering his prime, and he knows clubs have been looking at him. He’d be open to moving to England if the offers come in,” a well-placed source said.
The 6ft 5in forward is regarded as possessing the physical and technical attributes required to make an impact in the Premier League. His performances have reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, some of whom considered a move for him last summer.
Premier League interest in Igor Matanovic
Arsenal did not sign a new striker during the summer and could view Matanovic as an alternative to Kai Havertz, with the pair considered to share similar qualities.
Manchester United are also seeking greater attacking depth, with Benjamin Sesko having experienced a number of recent fitness problems. Chelsea, meanwhile, continue to monitor emerging young talent despite having Joao Pedro as their first-choice forward and Danny Welbeck as experienced cover.
Matanovic could have been available for about £30 million during the summer, but his valuation is now believed to have risen to approximately £50 million.
Freiburg are aware of the striker’s potential and are not expected to block a move if a major club makes an approach, although they will want to secure a significant fee.
The Bundesliga club sold Johan Manzambi to Aston Villa for £50 million during the summer and are understood to value Matanovic in a similar bracket. Freiburg can also point to Kevin Schade’s progress since leaving for Brentford, where the winger’s performances have led to interest from bigger clubs.
