Manchester United have ruled out a move for free-agent defender David Alaba, despite their continued need for reinforcements at centre-back and left-back.
The Austria international, 34, has been without a club since leaving Real Madrid at the end of last season. His experience and ability to operate in several defensive positions had made him a potential option for Michael Carrick’s side.
However, reports indicate that United have decided against pursuing the former Bayern Munich player as the club shifts its recruitment policy towards younger players with greater long-term potential.
Manchester United reject David Alaba opportunity
Alaba’s recent fitness record is understood to have played a significant part in the decision. He suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury in December 2023 and has missed 109 matches for club and country over the past three seasons.
His involvement at Real Madrid was limited during the 2025-26 campaign, when he made 16 appearances in all competitions and started only six matches.
That lack of regular football has done little to diminish his reputation. Alaba remains a highly decorated defender who has won the Champions League several times and can play at centre-back, left-back or in midfield.
He also captained Austria at the 2026 World Cup, starting all four of the country’s matches before their elimination by Spain in the last 32.
United had identified left-back as an area requiring attention during the summer, with competition for Luke Shaw among their priorities. No new player was ultimately signed in that position, leaving the club reliant on Shaw’s fitness and existing squad options.
Even so, the club appear unwilling to take another short-term gamble on an established name with a significant injury history. United have previously been criticised for relying on ageing players, and their current strategy is focused on recruiting defenders who can develop and retain value over several seasons.
Alaba’s availability on a free transfer therefore has not been enough to persuade United to make an approach, with the club expected to continue assessing younger alternatives for Carrick’s defensive unit.
