A University of Michigan student was arrested after a confrontation over Islam during which she allegedly shoved conservative influencer Lizzy Benichou to the ground and was heard saying: “I should’ve f***ing killed you when I had the f***ing chance.”
The student, who has not been identified, approached a man sitting behind a table on Sunday. A sign in front of him asked: “Is Islam Compatible with the West?”
She called the sign “f***ing stupid” and demanded that those at the table show her their “f***ing permit”. Video of the incident appears to show her clapping her hands in the man’s face, causing him to jerk his head backwards.
As other people filmed the confrontation, the student disputed that she had touched the man. She said she had “never put a hand” on him and described those around her as “f***ing anti-Muslim people”.
The dispute then turned towards Ms Benichou, who asked the student whether the way she was dressed would be acceptable in Iran.
The student subsequently shoved Ms Benichou to the ground, prompting police to intervene. While being arrested, she directed the threat towards the influencer.
Campus police said the student was arrested, processed and released. The incident is due to be forwarded to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Police said the victim, who is not affiliated with the university, later received medical treatment and was released.
