A Minneapolis shooting suspect had been fighting eviction from his ninth-floor flat when he allegedly opened fire inside the apartment complex, killing two civilians and injuring several others, including three police officers.
Calton Neal Johnson II, 35, was identified as the suspected gunman in the shooting at Loring Towers, also known as Shoreline Plaza, near Loring Park on Wednesday, September 2. Court records show that eviction proceedings against Johnson were launched after alleged incidents involving a firearm and threats at the building. A notice served in June accused him of breaching his lease on six occasions between January 16 and June 13.
The filings alleged that Johnson assaulted another resident in March and, on June 11, walked through the complex displaying a gun before entering the management office and showing the weapon to staff. He was also accused of telling residents that he had obtained a new gun and “would kill someone”, before allegedly displaying it again two days later.
Johnson denied the allegations in the eviction case. His response stated that he had a licence to carry a handgun and rejected claims that he had assaulted residents or threatened to kill anyone, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune.
The case remained unresolved when the shooting took place, with a court hearing scheduled for September 11. The Minneapolis Police Department said officers were called to the building at about 4.30pm after reports of gunfire and found victims in the lobby before tracing further shots to an upper floor.
