A motorist has been arrested in Arizona after allegedly driving the wrong way along Interstate 40 as part of a dangerous game called “Lunatic”, authorities said.
The driver was stopped west of Winslow on Sunday, September 20, after several members of the public reported seeing an SUV travelling west in the eastbound lanes near the State Route 99 interchange.
Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers intercepted the vehicle and brought it to a safe stop. The driver was arrested on suspicion of endangerment and reckless driving.
Driver claimed he was supervising ‘Lunatic’ game
During the stop, the man reportedly told troopers he had been taking part in “Lunatic” with two other people. He allegedly claimed he was supervising the game because he was the oldest participant.
The game involves deliberately driving against the flow of traffic on a motorway, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The driver’s name and age have not been released.
In a warning issued after the arrest, the department said wrong-way driving could be deadly and thanked the motorists who called 911 to report the SUV.
The case remains subject to the legal process. The allegations have not been tested in court.
