The mother of a newborn boy found dead in a rubbish bin in Sydney’s western suburbs has been arrested and is expected to be charged with concealing the birth of a child.
The 24-year-old was located by police on Thursday after an exhaustive investigation. She was taken to hospital before being transported to Auburn Police Station, where she answered questions from detectives.
Police arrested her at about 6.30pm. A police source said she was expected to be charged later that night with concealing the birth of a child, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of two years in prison.
The newborn was discovered naked inside what appeared to be a bin bag outside an apartment complex on Harrow Road, Auburn, on August 31.
Detective acting Superintendent Darren Sly said at the time that the baby may have been in the bin for up to 36 hours.
