The family of Renee Good, who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis on 7 January, has filed civil lawsuits against the US federal government, federal agents and officials.
The first complaint names the United States as the defendant and alleges wrongful death under Minnesota law. It claims that battery, assault, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence caused Ms Good’s death.
A separate lawsuit names ICE officer Jonathan Ross, who shot Ms Good, along with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, former Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem and others.
That complaint alleges a conspiracy by senior federal officials, immigration enforcement agents and private actors to interfere with civil rights. It also alleges a discriminatory conspiracy targeting Somali and Hispanic communities and seeking to silence their allies.
The legal action follows testimony before Congress by Ms Good’s mother and brother, Donna and Brent Ganger, who appeared at a joint hearing on fatal shootings involving federal immigration officers over the past two years.
