Russian air attacks on Ukraine have killed at least six people and triggered power cuts in parts of Kyiv, days after Donald Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” in the more-than-four-year war.
Ukraine’s state emergency service said two people died when a Russian strike hit a multi-storey building in Kyiv’s Desnianskyi district. A separate attack in the Golosiivskyi district killed another person.
Two further deaths were reported in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where six people were also wounded, while another person was killed in the south-eastern Zaporizhzhia region.
Power cuts reported in Kyiv after missile strike
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters as energy facilities in the capital and surrounding region came under what he described as a massive ballistic missile attack.
“There are power disruptions in the capital,” Mr Klitschko wrote on Telegram.
DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, said emergency power cuts had been imposed in several urban districts of Kyiv. Further Russian missile attacks were reported in the Kharkiv and Zhytomyr regions, while strikes also hit Sumy and Chernihiv.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had carried out a “massive” strike against communications and energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had not received advance warning from its Western allies before the attack and detected the missiles only as they approached Kyiv.
“A Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv. Once again, no early warning from our partners,” he wrote on Facebook. “This is absolutely unjust: when they are destroying our infrastructure, and Ukraine is not even receiving early warnings about ballistic missile launches.”
Mr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of breaching the energy ceasefire announced by Mr Trump on Sunday, saying the strike had specifically targeted infrastructure covered by the agreement.
“The strike was entirely deliberate and demonstrative in its scale – Russia has never before shown such ostentatious disrespect toward the United States,” he wrote on X.
Russia reports Ukrainian drone strikes
Russian authorities also reported overnight Ukrainian drone attacks. Roman Busargin, governor of the Saratov region, said one person was killed in the city of Balakovo, although he said infrastructure facilities there were operating normally.
Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said air defences had brought down nearly 500 drones flying towards the Russian capital. Russian officials reported that about 160 more were destroyed over the Rostov region.
Russia’s military later said 902 Ukrainian drones had been brought down overnight, including 180 near Moscow.
