Former Bachelor star Sam Wood has lodged a fresh bail application in the Queensland Supreme Court after being held at a high-security prison since his arrest on the Sunshine Coast.
The 46-year-old’s lawyers have applied for bail following his refusal at Maroochydore Magistrates Court. The Supreme Court is due to hear the application on November 4.
Wood was arrested at a property on Hastings Street, Noosa, on October 3 and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and strangulation in a domestic setting.
He is accused of assaulting his wife, Snezana, during a family holiday. Wood denies the allegations.
Wood has been held at Wolston Correctional Centre in Wacol, Brisbane, where he has been placed in a separate wing under a safety order intended to protect him from other prisoners.
He is also subject to regular welfare checks. His lawyer previously told the court that Wood was suffering from “extremely severe” depression.
Allegations heard during bail hearing
Prosecutors opposed bail during the initial hearing, citing the seriousness of the charges and concerns that Wood could flee Queensland. They pointed to his Melbourne home, limited local connections and access to resources that could allow him to leave the state.
The court heard the alleged incident began after the family returned from dinner. Snezana was said to have wanted to pack for a flight home the following morning, while Wood wanted to go to bed.
Acting Magistrate Janelle Boegheim heard allegations that Wood yelled at Snezana and pushed her into a wardrobe before the pair moved into a hallway.
Snezana’s daughter, Eve, 21, reportedly told Wood to stop yelling at her mother. Wood allegedly then moved aggressively towards Eve, prompting Snezana to step between them.
It is alleged that Wood grabbed Snezana by the throat, threw her against a wall and then on to the floor, restricting her airway. The court heard she told police she feared she would die and had been choked to the “cessation of breath”.
The alleged incident ended after Eve yelled out and later called triple-0, the court heard.
Wood’s lawyer, Mathew Cuskelly, said his client denied strangling his wife and might argue self-defence. He alleged that Snezana had moved towards Wood and continued yelling before he pushed her away.
Wood rose to prominence on The Bachelor Australia in 2015, where he met Snezana, and later built a fitness and nutrition business around his 28-day programme.
He sold the business to Melbourne-based myDNA in a deal worth $71 million in 2022, but remained its public face. Following the charges, pharmaceutical company DBG Health, which now owns the business, ended its commercial arrangements with him.
Wood’s name and logo have since been removed from his Brighton East gym, while “by Sam Wood” has been dropped from the brand, which is now known simply as 28.
