Plant & Soul California is seeking nearly $3 million after receiving an eviction notice linked to a real estate deal affecting its community garden in San Jose.
The organisation, which operates from 76 Race Street, is raising the money either to relocate or to make a counter-offer for the site, where it runs urban farming, education and community programmes.
Plant & Soul California has described the garden as a hub for native plants, ecological learning and regenerative agriculture. Its activities include volunteer gardening, workshops and programmes designed to reconnect children with nature.
The eviction notice was issued after an outside offer was made on the property, according to information shared with the organisation’s community. The group has said it does not yet know whether the deal will proceed or whether it will be forced to leave.
A meeting held for supporters in October was used to discuss the garden’s future and possible fundraising efforts. Organisers said the aim was to raise enough money for the community to submit its own offer for the land.
Plant & Soul California’s campaign comes as it also considers how its programmes could continue from another location if it cannot remain at the San Jose site.
