The funeral for NSW Police Constable Mia Lay, who was killed in a police car crash in Sydney’s south, will be held at St Andrews’ Cathedral in the city centre on Wednesday.
The service is due to begin at 1.30pm at the cathedral, next to Town Hall Station. It will be followed by a police march along Bathurst Street, beginning outside the building.
Constable Lay was killed instantly on September 25 when the police car in which she was travelling crashed into a tree on Gibbins Street, Redfern, while officers were responding to reports of a stolen car.
The vehicle was being driven by a male constable and had its lights and sirens activated at the time. Images from the scene showed the car severely damaged and split in two.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon described Constable Lay as a much-loved member of the South Sydney Police Area Command.
“There is nothing I can say easily that takes the pain away, but please know that Mia was a loved police officer,” he said shortly after the crash. “She showed exceptional promise, and was well loved … she would have been an outstanding police officer.”
Family and friends gathered at the crash scene the following day to pay their respects, leaving tributes at the tree.
Her partner, Daniel Vasquez, described Constable Lay as a kind-hearted person who gave love to those she cared about. He said she had been happy in the police, was good at her job and was loved by the community.
