Two men accused in an alleged Cornell University gang rape case appear to remain enrolled at the New York institution, despite the university saying a disciplinary investigation resulted in expulsions and suspensions.
Winston Lee and Gillio Lopes are listed as current students in Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences, according to the university’s student directory as reported by The Cornell Daily Sun.
Diego Sarabia, another of the seven accused men, is listed as an alumnus. The directory does not establish the current academic status of Matthew Ingalls, Johnathan Newell, Scott Norris or Scott Kretzschmar, whose colleges are recorded as “not applicable”.
A lawsuit alleges that all seven Chi Phi fraternity members were temporarily suspended after an alleged assault in October 2024. Cornell has said its months-long Title IX investigation ended with a disciplinary panel imposing a range of sanctions, including expulsions and suspensions.
The university has not disclosed which individuals received particular punishments, citing federal privacy law. Cornell has also rejected a claim in the lawsuit that the men were allowed to mitigate their conduct by writing essays, saying none was offered essays as the sole consequence.
The lawsuit alleges that the seven men drugged a 20-year-old woman, identified as Jane Doe, with ketamine and raped her while she was unconscious. It claims one of the men contacted others on Snapchat and summoned them upstairs.
The Tompkins County district attorney has since reopened the 2024 case, which is expected to go before a grand jury.
Cornell has been approached for comment but had not responded.
