Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke, his chief of staff has said.
Allison Herwitt said Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game yesterday afternoon. He was taken to hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered a stroke.
Murphy was later transferred to a Johns Hopkins medical centre and “responded well to treatment”, Ms Herwitt said.
She added: “The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are very optimistic he will make a full recovery.”
Connecticut Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz said she had been with Murphy the day before the stroke and that he “was energetically encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming election”.
Senator Richard Blumenthal, who represents Connecticut alongside Murphy, said: “Thinking of my great friend and colleague, Chris Murphy. I know how fiercely he fights and I’m certain I’ll be welcoming him back to the Senate soon.”
