US Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalised after suffering a stroke, with his office saying the Connecticut Democrat is awake, alert and responding well to treatment.
Murphy, 53, began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game on Saturday, according to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined that he had suffered a stroke.
He was later transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further monitoring. Ms Herwitt said doctors were encouraged by his progress and that his office was optimistic he would make a full recovery.
“He is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” she said in a statement issued on Sunday.
Murphy was elected to the US Senate in 2012 and sits on the powerful Appropriations Committee. The Democrat has also been viewed as a possible future Senate leader and a potential presidential candidate.
