Arsenal secured their first win at Liverpool in 14 attempts with a 1-0 victory at Anfield, moving three points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, converting a low cross from Declan Rice after Liverpool were caught attempting to play out from the back.
The result ended Arsenal’s long wait for a victory at Liverpool. Their previous success there came in September 2012, when Mikel Arteta captained the visiting side in a 2-0 win.
Liverpool responded with sustained pressure, but Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a curling free-kick and Alexis Mac Allister headed over from a promising position.
Arsenal’s defence held firm after the interval, limiting Liverpool’s opportunities and keeping the home side without a shot on target for the second meeting in succession.
Arteta’s team now have 24 points from nine games. Manchester City, who lost at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, are three points behind.
Liverpool’s second league defeat of the season leaves Andoni Iraola’s side in fifth place, nine points adrift of the leaders.
